Hey you,

Looking for a job sucks. Not dissimilar to dating, it's a grueling process that leaves some feeling unappreciated and vulnerable.

What's more, it’s so frustrating to have to wade through vague descriptions and buzzwords to decipher what a company really wants out of you. Trying to make sure it won't be a thankless exploitation for long hours of something you really don't give a crap about.

This may be a maddening or difficult time, and I hope you find something that fuels you, brings you happiness, and takes advantage of your skills.

Whether or not we wind up working together, please know that you are enough. In your search, be sure to look for the red flags, trust your gut, and remember that — even when you feel like you don't — you've got this. Keep going.

Hang in there,
Amanda

Chief Creative Officer
Scanned Inc.

About the Position

Scanned Inc. is a design-driven consumer electronics design and software company (B2C). Our flagship product line, Doxie, has offered award-winning document scanners for going paperless since 2008; Barcode Producer is the industry-leading design suite for creating barcodes for packages and products.

We’re hiring a Director of Marketing to manage, develop, and grow our marketing department, team, and capacity. This role requires someone who loves to lead, make continual improvements, research and analyze all the things, and see all projects to completion. They’ll identify, strategize, and set specific short, medium, and long-term goals and milestones to develop a cohesive and profitable marketing strategy.

We’re looking for someone responsible, self-directed, and able to stay organized while working on complex, multi-faceted projects simultaneously. They must be resourceful and patient while handling complex situations — and know the difference between working hard and working smart.

They’re a creative thinker and problem solver with the ability to quickly connect (and pivot) the dots. Experience in planning and building successful customer and content experience strategies, customer lifecycle marketing, and sales performance improvements is a must. Bonus points will be awarded for failure prior to success.

They’ll possess an abundance of common sense, take initiative, have an eye for detail, and take extreme pride in what they create. Strong analytical and strategy skills — partnered with a creative mind — to identify long-term opportunities and strategies required.

This job is offered as a fully remote position. All positions at Scanned Inc. are remote-friendly. Remote work isn’t new to us — we’ve done it for quite a while, and we’re very good at it — and we’re organizationally “remote-first.” Occasional business travel may be required in future years. There will not be any company travel during a global pandemic.

Our Ideal Candidate

All the buzzwords and professional jargon aside, we're looking for a real person who appreciates clever marketing, leads projects well and will roll up their sleeves to get shit done. We need someone fueled by progress, who pushes creative boundaries and has a deep understanding of the art of marketing with a focus on customer and user experience.

Our ideal candidate is, at their core, a storyteller — someone with the ability to research and understand complicated concepts, size up their audience, then clearly and concisely explain things in ways that resonate with their audience. You must genuinely grasp our customer’s experiences and develop clever, empathetic marketing strategies that use a smart interplay between words and visuals to translate our product’s features and benefits into relatable and valuable content — all while respecting their time and attention.

Your organizational, communication, and leadership skills are second to none. You enjoy researching, analyzing, and developing innovative solutions or improvements to standardize replicable strategies. You'll use these skills to work closely with company leadership to strategize and develop long-term plans that initiate new levels of creativity and success at Scanned Inc.

Your goal is to safeguard and improve the efficiency of the marketing department to facilitate accelerating the growth and long-term success of our brands and products across multiple markets and platforms. You'll need strong, proven, foundational skills in marketing processes and leadership. You'll often need to process complex information, search for the actionable point, make a realistic game plan, and see it through to completion. Your strong attention to detail and results is essential.

You must be competent and able to plan many different kinds of marketing activities. You’ll have the ability to balance multiple ongoing projects on a daily basis and the ability to change priorities quickly and work well under pressure (e.g., campaigns, launches, and other time-sensitive projects may throw last-minute or unforeseeable curveballs). You'll have perseverance and patience when dealing with complicated matters and a curiosity in learning how and why things work. You prioritize asking "should we do this?" over "could we do this?"

We aren't looking to hire a Director of Marketing who sees their primary role as simply telling others what to figure out and watching presentations from staff from afar, abstracting themselves from the actual work. This position's success is all about day-to-day execution. In addition to assembling a plan, strategy, or process, you need to actively make sure things are moving forward and getting done on a daily and weekly basis. You'll take direct responsibility for the department's end goals, timelines, and ensuring your team accomplishes measurable goals and contributes to the company for short and long-term success.

What Our Hiring Process Looks Like

Aside from an initial phone screen and final interview, we've eliminated the annoying process of "let's have a million different calls with a million different people to say the same million things" and developed an asynchronous written "interview kit" — it interactively lets us get to know you better and lets you get to know us better.

How it Works:

  1. You submit your resume and answers to the application questions
  2. Those selected to move forward will have a 20-minute chat/phone screen with a senior person at the company
  3. Those who are then chosen to move forward will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement and then offered a written "interview kit." We like to be transparent about who we are and what we're about, so you can decide if it's a good fit for you to pursue a position with us
  4. Those who move forward will have a video call interview with our executive team
  5. That's it — if you get past all those steps and are selected for the position, you'll get a job offer, you'll (hopefully) accept, and 🎉 we'll do great things together!
We know it’s a long, multi-step process — and you probably wanted a job like yesterday — but this must be a great fit for both of us. Being a team isn’t just a one-way street of “we choose you” — you also have to choose us.

Responsibilities

  • Take the reins of day-to-day marketing department operations in support of the company’s current and long-term overall objectives and goals
  • With dexterity and persistence, research and analyze goals, metrics, data, user feedback, and market trends to strategize and improve our roadmap and customer lifecycle marketing (omg, so many buzzwords)
  • Direct supervision and responsibility for the development, implementation, growth, upkeep, and completion of all department projects — content experience, customer experience, content marketing, SEO, advertising, eCommerce and marketplace, sales, customer and public communications, and all marketing and product launch campaigns
  • Experiment, adapt, and implement new strategies by analyzing platform performance metrics, conducting A/B experiments, and testing new platform features as they become available
  • Prepare regular reports and asynchronous presentations on marketing efforts, goals, metrics (e.g., ROI, KPIs, and other applicable acronyms, etc.), and budgets for the Director of Operations, Chief Creative Officer, and CEO. Provide information about where we’re kicking ass, where we’re having our asses kicked, and the actions we’ll take moving forward.
  • Discover and vet efficient services, tools, processes, and workflows for managing ongoing marketing activities. Then, integrate, automate, and optimize tools, systems, and workflows to improve monitoring and on-the-fly adjustments to projects as necessary. (i.e., play with shit and implement the things that don’t suck)
  • Identify, source, hire, and oversee department staffing needs — in-house staff, services, or third-party consultants — to manage, support, develop, and grow your team and department’s capacity. (Skeezy tacticians need not apply)
  • Other responsibilities based on your individual strengths, abilities, and interests (sorry, vague, but we haven’t met yet
    ¯\(ツ)/¯ )

Requirements

  • Degree in either marketing, advertising, public relations, or communications — bonus points for a psychology background — or equivalent experience
  • A deep understanding, proven skills, and previous success with presenting, promoting, and selling products on Amazon, Shopify, or other online retailers or eCommerce platforms
  • An understanding of technology and easy adaptability to new software applications and cloud services.
  • Exceptional digital communication and organization skills without supervision – while ensuring nothing slips through the cracks. (Nearly 100% of your ongoing work will be computer-driven)
  • Experience with macOS and iOS devices — the company is entirely Mac-based
  • Helpful but not required: experience with product development, hardware/software UX, customer experience, and/or customer support
  • An affinity and appreciation for the incredibly necessary — and not at all “optional” — Oxford comma (viva la Elements of Style!)
