I completed 25 years of full-time service with the Royal Canadian Navy as of 30 June 2015. My career has been incredibly varied, with exposure to increasingly complex levels of responsibility throughout, both at sea and ashore. My last position was acting as the Project Manager for the Navy Learning Support Centre - East. This Quebec City-based team provided leading-edge learning support to the Royal Canadian Navy. It specialized in the creation of advanced 3D Virtual Vessels and associated learning technologies. Learners access this training from anywhere via the internet or workstation.
Project Manager for the Navy Learning Support Centre - East in Quebec City. This team develops and supports advanced learning tools for the Royal Canadian Navy. We have developed expertise in the creation of virtual, 3D vessels using the Unity 3D video game engine, which helps the user to undertake ship-based learning anytime and anywhere. Our team also has been instrumental in the Canadain Navy's implementation of the SABA-based Defence Learning Network (DLN) since early 2013. Later in 2013 when our development team was constrained by working within an EMSEC-zoned building, I initated the effort to co-locate the staff in the nearby offices of the Canada School of Public Service without cost where they could work unimpeded by lack of Internet access. This resulted in dramatically higher productivity levels, along with improved team morale. I also saw the training potential of the Oculus Rift, a revolutionary advance in Virtual Reality, in the fall of 2012, as I backed this project on Kickstarter. When it finally arrived in May 2013, our team experimented with its integration within the Canadian Virtual Naval Fleet.
