Note: Temporal is written in Go (server) and Rust (core SDK), but language specific experience is not necessary to join.

What we need in a leader for the First Designer role

*A focus on developers: Our developers are critical to us, they are our users. We need a Designer who understands they way developers think and can implement designs that ensure an exemplary developer experience. *A desire to seek the truth: We’re an inclusive and collaborative team. People who can discuss root issues, hold themselves (and others) accountable, agree that it is healthy that we all won’t always have the same opinion, and can talk through the discussion point and commit to a course of action will thrive at Temporal. *Reliability is paramount: Fortune 500’s trust Temporal to run mission critical and revenue generating applications. We need a designer who will keep reliability and ease of use top of mind in all they do. When our customers use our product’s UI, it should inspire trust and show how much we care about reliability at all levels of the entire product.

What You’ll do: *Be the leader who helps shape Temporal’s look and feel, setting the standard for our design practice and taking an active role in growing the design team in future. *Work closely with engineers to ensure the designs are implemented effectively and iterate to refine the design and respond to customer feedback. *Collaborate with engineers and product managers at telescoping granularity — Sometimes on broadly defined, high level concepts, and sometimes narrowly defined, tactical deliverables. *Focus on what you do best — whether that’s sketches, wireframes, prototypes, designs, or code— and you’ll have the opportunity to sharpen the skills you’re looking to develop. *Work in a highly collaborative fashion with project teams and company leadership. *Conduct user research and support ongoing research projects. *Lead design reviews and share your work regularly with the design and company leadership.

You might be a fit if: *You have experience with UX and UI design for highly technical products. *You have 10+ years relevant design experience at a product-driven tech company. *You have experience coaching other designers. *You have experience contributing to design systems within an organization or as part of an open-source project. *You are confident in writing HTML & CSS, reading basic code and are familiar with version control. *You enjoy reducing complex problems down to the right balance of flexibility, power, and ease of use. *You are skilled in explaining your work, process, and decisions to stakeholders (aka non-designers in the rest of the company) and feedback to help you produce your best work. *You think in systems and are able to extrapolate and extend shared patterns and behaviors. *You want the challenge of setting the industry standard for a cutting edge developer platform.

You will work on: *Temporal’s open source web UI - a critical component for both developers and operators. *Temporal Cloud UI - the interface of our business for enterprises and rapidly growing teams. *Temporal homepage, docs and other brand pages. *Event, print, and other graphic or marketing design needs only occasionally.
