b2b startup software engineering

Woven is a Series A SaaS startup on a mission to eliminate the gap between talent and opportunity. We believe developer hiring should be based on real engineering work, not on leetcode, credentials, or who you know. So our customers use Woven’s work simulations to give all candidates a fair chance.

1 out of 3 hires are Hidden Gems who would have been missed and 100 out of 100 candidates get detailed feedback on their work.

We’re looking for a director of engineering to help us scale our people, processes, and technology so that we can continue rapidly delivering product. You’ll report directly to the CEO.

You’re building a team

This is an exciting opportunity to build an engineering team that you want to work with. Currently we have 2 engineers and looking to grow to 7 engineers in the next few months. We have a product manager on staff, and plan to hire a product designer.

Defining our repeatable delivery process

You’re excited about improving engineering delivery by adding the right amount of structure and process. This could include improvements in code review / pairing, automated testing, issue tracking, or deployment pipelines. You will need to balance the day-to-day needs of shipping with the longer-term investments that will keep the team shipping high quality software.

What you’ll do

  • Hire, lead, and coach a growing world-class distributed remote engineering team.
  • Recruit top engineering talent and scale to 1 team, and then 2, and through hypergrowth. (You may have read and loved Accelerate or Team Topologies.)
  • Move quickly and embody our 1% better value by incrementally evolving our team and services. (Build boxes, not arches)
  • Serve as the engineering team’s voice to help steer the strategy and direction of the company.
  • Cultivate a strong, transparent, and collaborative engineering culture.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Customer Success, and Sales to help understand the needs of our prospects and customers and ship world-class solutions.
  • Track key service and productivity metrics and continually work towards improving team efficiency and engineering capacity.
  • Design, develop, and roadmap scalable, reliable, performant, and extensible architectures and technical designs.

About you

Here are some things we think would lead to success in this role. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t have this exact experience!

  • You probably have 3+ years of professional experience managing software engineers.
  • Most of our product team is US-based and we still collaborate synchronously, so your work schedule should be within a few hours of US Eastern.
  • You have ideas on how to grow and evolve the team, including forming teams and clarifying team boundaries.
  • You might have experience growing the engineering team through non-traditional hiring sources, including international hiring.
  • You’re a great communicator, including written communication (extra important on our distributed team).
  • You are approachable and welcome feedback.
  • You enjoy helping others grow in their careers, from doing regular 1:1 meetings to setting expectations and giving advancement opportunities with career ladders.
  • Since the team is small and you’ll be working closely with engineers, having experience with a web framework (Rails, Django, Node) in a dynamic language (Ruby, Python, JavaScript) would be helpful. Our main application runs on Heroku, and uses Ruby on Rails, React, Postgres, and Sidekiq. We also use Python for some machine learning. We’re open to using other languages/tools (TypeScript!) where it makes sense.

Other

We don’t expect folks to have these, but would consider experience or interest in the following a nice bonus:

  • Working with integrations, including: low/no code (Airtable, Zapier); Slack bots; technical assessment platforms; applicant tracking systems like Greenhouse, Lever, and Workable
  • Writing infrastructure code that allows us to scale the product as we grow.
  • SOC 2 or other security / compliance.

Position compensation and company benefits

  • Annual salary
  • Significant (~.5%) equity in a high-growth startup
  • Fully remote work at a fully remote company with flexible hours
  • Unlimited PTO with 38 days off minimum
  • Employer-sponsored health insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • 8 weeks 100% paid parental leave at 1 year
  • Radical transparency: company financials, strategy, compensation, etc
  • A tech stipend for great gear, home office improvements, and extracurricular learning
  • A passionate team of co-conspirators
  • We want to change hiring for companies and developer candidates.
