A Charlotte, North Carolina-based Neonatologist, Dr. Allen Cherer graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA degree in Biology and obtained his MD degree from the Medical College of Georgia.
While a third year medical student studying under Dr. Kenneth Henderson, he developed an enduring interest in Pediatrics and, more specifically, in the care of the premature newborn. Following the footsteps of his mentor, he completed a Pediatrics residency at Kosair Children's Hospital at the University of Louisville School of Medicine where his Department Chairman was Dr. Billy F. Andrews, considered one of the founding fathers of Neonatology. Dr. Allen Cherer was then commissioned in the United States Air Force Medical Corps and served as Chief of Pediatrics at the USAF Regional Hospital Minot (North Dakota). Following military service, he completed a Neonatal-Perinatal fellowship in the Joint Program in Neonatology at Harvard Medical School and obtained further training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston.
Since completion of his training, Dr. Cherer has participated in the care of thousands of sick newborns over the past three decades in Level III intensive care nurseries (NICU's) in Georgia, California, and North Carolina. He has assisted in the development of teams to safely transport ill newborns requiring specialized care. Most recently, he has served as a hospital physician leader in quality of care collaboratives sponsored by the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) and the Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina (PQCNC) to improve care to patients and families affected by substance abuse disorders and to further engage families in patient care. Dr. Cherer has taught on the clinical faculties of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and the Cabarrus (North Carolina) Family Medicine Residency Program. He continues to teach the Newborn Resuscitation Program (NRP) and the S.T.B.L.E. Program.
