Rabbi Jonathan Z. Maltzman joined the Rockville, Maryland, Kol Shalom synagogue in 2002. The congregation has grown significantly under his leadership, from 15 families to nearly 300. Rabbi Jonathan Z. Maltzman has consistently embraced nontraditional families into the Conservative congregation.


After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor of arts in Near Eastern studies, Jonathan Z. Maltzman was admitted to the rabbinical school at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York City. During his time at the school, he earned both a Masters Degree in Rabbinics and was ordained a Rabbi in 1980. While a student there he became president of the senior rabbinical school class and organized a number of athletic events between theological schools.


In 2005, Jonathan Z. Maltzman received an honorary doctor of divinity in recognition of 25 years of service to the international Jewish community. Under the guidance of Rabbi Maltzman, Kol Shalom has become the only Conservative synagogue to achieve a gold rating under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program.
